Doctor Who 9.11, 9.12 and 9.13: “Face the Raven”, “Heaven Sent”, “Hell Bent”

I could have done these in individual posts, but I’ll be honest: I was busy, I was tired, I couldn’t be bothered.  The three preceding episodes were so offensively terrible, they managed to pretty much destroy my enthusiasm for season 9.

It’s a shame, because “Face the Raven” was genuinely outstanding, and not just because it advanced a strong anti-birb agenda.  And “Heaven Sent” and “Hell Bent” were both quite good, even though I nearly noped out when —

But I get ahead of myself.

thoughts i have had whilst watching #hackahairdryer three times

IBM released a new campaign ostensibly for women in STEM called #hackahairdryer. It’s since been pulled, but not before I watched the video three times in order to form an opinion after seeing twitter outrage all day.

thoughts i have had whilst watching #hackahairdryer three times (some of these thoughts were because Danni allcapsed at me)

I want mine solar powered and sentient.

I wonder if flatmate of No Award Bella will mind if I hack her hairdryer?

I know my science is enviro but I had a Dick Smith Electronic Set when I was a kid and I was bloody good at it.

no award does important cocktail research

Liz and Steph, who only have your best interests at heart, recently attended the From Bush to Bar Cocktail Workshop held at the Immigration Museum as part of North South Feast West. We were promised native ingredients, which sadly didn’t appear, but we did get local spirits, a very interesting history of spirits and grains, a whole lot of ideas for cocktails, and a tiny bit squiffy.  It was for science.

Peter Combe and the climate dystopia agenda.

petercombe via wheeler centrePeter Combe has prepared a generation of Australians for Our Climate Dystopia.

Climate change is happening, and we are ready.

Is it any wonder Gen Y is so tuned into climate change? We know what’s going on; we’ve always known. The sun is hot and over long; overgrazing is damaging the local ecology, which is leading to erosion and further ecological damage.

Join Official Potato Moya and Steph on an indepth analysis of Peter Combe’s influence on Australians of the 80s and 90s.

Destroy the Joint versus women with disabilities

Destroy the Joint is an Australian feminist … movement?  Hashtag?  Group? that took its name from Alan Jones’s complaint that women were “destroying the joint” by turning up to things and doing their jobs and having opinions, and also, at the time, being Prime Minister.

We at No Award have long had a bit of side-eye for DtJ, because while it does many good things, it’s also super white feministical, for example, spearheading movements to make the government provide tampons to refugees in detention.  (We’ve already talked about the reasons why this is not always culturally appropriate.)

(White feminism: shorthand for feminism that isn’t intersectional, so-called because it usually ignores or outright erases the needs and experiences of women of colour.  It’s essentially feminism that’s applicable only to white, middle-class, able-bodied, cis women.)

Destroy the Joint have a history of excluding women of disabilities, as the late, magnificent Stella Young discussed in 2013.

Destroy the joint? Shit, I’d be happy just to be allowed in the joint.

mariah improving the lodge and some auspol shenanigans

Ms Mariah Carey has been dating a man who is beneath her for some time now. (Not for the first time!  Probs not for the last!  Spoilers: most men are unworthy of Mariah.)

Last week No Award encountered the rumour that she had left her own place to move into his subpar mansion. Although Mariah has since denied these claims, it took us to a great place: the idea of Mariah moving into the Lodge.
